A continuation of our Visual Literacy unit, looking at how the techniques of sound, colour, emotion and camera angles are used to make the viewer feel about a character or scene in the ‘Matilda’ movie and then presenting findings to the class.

 

Investigating short narratives to unpack effective literary devices and sizzling starts. Students will create their own ‘sizzling starts’ for stories and practise writing elements of their own narrative.

In week 4, we will undertake a small test to check for our understanding and demonstrate our knowledge of the water in the world unit.

In weeks 6 and 7, we will be investigating the Murray-Darling Management Scheme and providing a report.

To start term 2, students are looking at solving problems involving the squares of numbers and the square roots of perfect square numbers. This will be a two-week unit.

Students in week 3 will begin studying Measurement. They will use formulas for the areas of triangles and parallelograms, with a particular focus on the correct setting out of their work. They will calculate the volumes of rectangular & triangular prisms. There will be a CAT task at the end of this unit in week 5.

In week 6, students will describe relationships between the radius, diameter and circumference of a circle. There will be a CAT (common assessment task) in week 7.

In week 8, students will apply knowledge of angle relationships and the sum of angles in a triangle to solve problems. There will be a CAT in week 10.

We will continue looking into chemistry, understanding density and diffusion, what are mixtures and pure substances, and how to separate mixtures using different styles of equipment and methods, such as filtration, distillation, and evaporation. There will be a CAT (Common Assessment Task) to complete the unit.

Students will complete a unit called Earth and Space science and look into cyclic changes in the relative positions of the Earth, sun and moon and explain how these cycles cause eclipses and influence predictable phenomena on Earth, including seasons and tides. There will be a CAT to complete the unit.

In the first half of Term 2, Year 7 Foods students will explore a variety of cooking methods. They will investigate how these techniques influence the texture, flavour and nutritional value of food. This exploration will lead to a focus on healthy eating.
Assessments will involve practical cooking activities and research-based tasks.

In the second half of the term, students will deepen their understanding by examining how different cooking methods can support healthy eating goals.

Common assessments will involve planning, preparing and presenting a healthy meal.

Year 7s will be learning about coding and its importance in our everyday lives. Students will begin to learn how to use the program Scratch.

Students will continue learning to use Scratch and develop their skills in order to complete their major assignment - a design in Scratch using code that other students can access and play.

Students will be studying Geography this term, looking at Landscapes and Landforms. They will cycle through 5 landscapes (tundra/mountain, grassland, forest, desert, coastal), looking at continuity and change in each environment. There will be a CAT (Common Assessment Task) in Week 4 requiring students to write a detailed report on forest landscapes, describing them, mapping their location, annotating a sketch of a landform, and writing about the impacts humans have on forests.

Students will continue their study of Geography this term, looking at Landscapes and Landforms. They will cycle through 5 landscapes (tundra/mountain, grassland, forest, desert, coastal), looking at continuity and change in each environment. There will be a CAT in Week 9, which will be an in-class exam that covers all of the content covered in the term. There will be revision time given.

Students will use formulas to calculate the perimeter, area and volume of shapes.  They will use Pythagoras' Theorem to solve measurement problems involving unknown lengths of right-angle triangles. Students will complete a test during class time in Week 6.

Students will identify conditions for congruency and similarity in triangles.  They will apply their knowledge of angle properties of quadrilaterals to solve problems. Students will complete an assessment during class time in Week 10.

Students will continue their study of the Human Body, looking into body systems and how they work and interact with each other, specifically the respiratory system, different types of system disorders and how artificial organs can help keep a system functioning. There will be a CAT (Common Assessment Task) to complete the unit.

Students will begin their Chemistry Unit by comparing physical and chemical changes and identifying indicators of energy change in chemical reactions. They will also learn how to classify matter as elements, compounds or mixtures and compare different representations of these, using 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional models, symbols for elements and formulas for molecules and compounds. This unit will continue into Term 3.

In Health, students will continue with Culture and Identity, looking at what makes them unique, their personal qualities and how we develop our identity. The assessment for this unit will be a Bumper Sticker activity.

 

 

In PE, students will be completing a cross-country unit in preparation for the upcoming Cross Country carnival, working on their cardiovascular fitness and endurance.

The last two units of the term will cover Gender, Stereotypes and Bullying. Their assessment will be a ‘road map activity’.

Heart Health will be our final unit of the Term, and the assessment will involve both theoretical and practical components.

CATs (Common Assessment Tasks) will involve planning, preparing and presenting a nutritious meal that demonstrates an understanding of healthy eating.

During the first half of this Term, Year 8 Music students will deepen their understanding of key musical elements, including rhythm, pitch, dynamics, and tempo. Through engaging with popular music, they will refine their ability to recognise and identify these elements in popular music and explore how composers and musicians utilise them to create or evoke specific moods, feelings, and styles. They will undertake a listening analysis CAT (Common Assessment Task) to complete this Unit.

Students will apply their knowledge of musical elements to enhance their skills on an instrument. The CAT for the practical element of this course will involve a practice journal and a practical performance.

During Term 2, students in Year 9 English are studying Coming of Age Stories with a focus on how authors and directors create engaging and interesting characters. Students are currently reading and watching Lockie Leonard and will be comparing the novella to the TV adaptation.

We are continuing with our Coming of Age Stories, now looking at film studies and focusing on Moonrise Kingdom.

In the first half of Term 2, we will commence our study of World War 1. We will watch the film Gallipoli as a hook and will refer to the film throughout the unit of study. We will look at the main causes of World War 1 and draw a map to visualise where it occurred and what countries fought on the different sides. We will do a number of short tasks to contribute to a digital folio of work, but our Common Assessment will be analysing recruitment posters.  Students will load their completed task onto Canvas. It is important that students catch up on any missed work due to absence – all our learning materials are on Canvas, and this is where teacher feedback on work will be provided.  Parents have access and can follow their child’s learning.

During the second half of Term 2, we continue to study World War 1 but shift our focus from the Eastern Front to the Western Front.  We will have our Frank MacDonald Memorial Prize question by now and students will be given the option to work on an entry that could earn them a trip to the Western Front. Our Common Assessment will be a photograph analysis. Students will load their completed task onto Canvas. It is important that students catch up on any missed work due to absence – all our learning materials are on Canvas, and this is where teacher feedback on work will be provided.  Parents have access and can follow their child’s learning.

In the first half of Term 2 in Year 9 Maths, we will be finishing work on linear functions, working out the distance between two points and finding the midpoint of a line. They will have a test on this during Week 3. After, students will be working to solve problems involving ratio, similarity and scale in two-dimensional situations, with an assessment during the second part of the term.

During the second half of Term 2, students will be expanding binomial products and factorising monic quadratic expressions. They will be applying mathematical modelling to solve problems involving linear and quadratic functions. There will be a test on this before the end of the term.

This term, we are completing a unit on Body Systems that includes studying the nervous system, the brain and the endocrine system. There will be a test for Body Systems by the end of Week 5.

During the second half of Term 2, students will be studying Chemistry. This will include many experiments, and students will be assessed on a practical report and test before the end of the Term.

Students are reading The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, looking at how this novel presents and critiques ideas about social justice, racism and community. Assessments in the middle and the end of the term will focus on understanding a complex text and interpreting the ideas presented by the author.

In the first half of Term 2, students will continue their study of WWII. Students explore the early success of the Nazis in conquering most of Europe. The CAT (Common Assessment Task) looks specifically at the use of Blitzkrieg and provides students with the opportunity to write an essay. This requires them to research and locate evidence to position themselves with a standpoint in response to an inquiry question.

In the second half of Term 2, students turn closer to home and investigate the rise of Japan and the war in the Pacific. The CAT task is focused on the bombing of Darwin. Students engage with two different primary sources related to the bombing and decide which is more accurate and reliable, by way of identifying potential bias and self-interest, as well as considering the overall content and purpose of the texts.

In the first half of Term 2 in Year 10, Maths students will interpret networks and network diagrams used to represent relationships in practical situations and describe connectedness. There will be an assessment on this during Week 4.

During the second half of the term, students will be applying Pythagoras' theorem and trigonometry to solve practical problems involving right-angled triangles. There will be an assessment on this before the end of the term.

In the first half of Term 2, students will be studying Natural Selection. This will include applying their knowledge of genetics to explain the evidence that supports the theory. There will be an assessment task in Week 4.

During the second half of Term 2, Ms Heathcote’s 10B class will study Climate Change, learning about atmospheric chemistry and the impact of changes. Ms McQuitty’s 10A and 10C classes will study Chemistry, learning about different types of chemical reactions and how we use them in everyday situations. All classes will have assessment tasks in Week 9.

In the first half of the term, students will focus on catering for in-house and external requests, developing skills in recipe interpretation, measurement and scaling.

Assessments will include practical catering tasks and planning.

 

In the second half of the term, students will shift focus to plate presentation and menu design in preparation for a pop-up restaurant. They will apply food styling techniques and work collaboratively to present a cohesive dining experience.

Assessments will include their final plated dish and menu design.

Outdoor Education

During the first half of this term, students will be focusing on navigation and mapping skills. Students will work in small groups to develop their ability to use a compass and map, as well as GPS units, in order to find bearings and various locations in the local community and further afield. Assessment will be ongoing, based on class involvement and the ability to follow set processes in order to find specified locations.

 

During the second half of this term, students will undertake various activities focusing on personal and group safety in the outdoors. This will lead to basic First Aid techniques, which students could utilise in emergency situations. Assessment is based on their practical ability to display safe working habits and adequate First Aid techniques.

In the second half of the term, students will refine their food product, prepare it collaboratively and present it as part of an enterprise pitch. They develop packaging, branding and promotional materials while reflecting on their design choices and teamwork.

For the start of the term, we continue our work from Module 1, comparing how two TV series represent Tasmania. Then as we start module 2 we explore how different types of texts present arguments to persuade.

We continue to look at how texts present arguments, now watching a contemporary film as our focus text.

Essential Skills Reading and Writing Level 2

Students will be learning about texts used in everyday settings. They will find and read information from a range of everyday sources, both online and in hard copy, identify different types of personal written communication and identify various types of graphic information. For their assessment, students will routinely demonstrate their comprehension and writing skills.

We will continue to learn about texts used in everyday settings and complete assessments weekly.

Essential Mathematics – Workplace Level 2

Students will be starting a module on data and graphs. They will work to interpret graphs that represent data and to analyse and compare different sets of data. They will learn to sketch graphs from data by hand and by using technology.

Our students will be starting a new module on univariate statistics. By the end of this 5-6 week unit, students will be able to classify variables, sketch different types of statistical graphs (including histograms and box plots), describe the shape of graphs, and interpret and describe data using measures of centre and spread.

Food and Cooking Essentials Level 1

In the first half of the term, students will build on existing skills and knowledge with a focus on food and personal safety, food preparation techniques and incorporating healthy food and lifestyle choices.
Assessments will include practical tasks and research activities related to safe food practices and healthy meal planning.

 

In the second half of the term, students will explore more advanced food preparation skills, recipe modification and meal design that supports health and well-being. They will also reflect on how lifestyle choices impact dietary needs.

Learning Through Internship Level 2

Our major focus for the start of Term 2 is to get ready for our internships (10 days of placement in a workplace that is linked to our future goal).  Students will approach businesses that they have identified and secure their own placement. We will then start the paperwork, ready for placement to occur.

Students will be completing their internships. Hopefully, these will be valuable learning experiences that will confirm they have made the right career choice (it is also valuable to learn now if they have made an error in their career choice).  Students will complete a diary of their time on internship, and this will inform their work in Term 3 when they give a presentation about their experience and learnings.

The major focus at the beginning of term 2 will be continuing with the Identity Unit, looking at respectful relationships. Following this, the class will be delving into what it means to learn and how we can, as students, continue the lifelong learning process and relate this to gaining employment.

The second half of Term 2 will be preparing ourselves for the workforce by completing resumes, job applications and building an e-portfolio.
